Engagement in training programs, peacekeeping missions, and exercises contributes to developing a new generation of officers who are fully interoperable with their NATO counterparts. The Partnership Staff Post (PSP) Concept plays a crucial role in this endeavor. It enables partner countries to second their officers to various NATO Headquarters and Commands, allowing them to gain experience and knowledge by working alongside Allies. Since 2002, Azerbaijan has effectively utilized this instrument, providing many officers for PSP posts.
Azerbaijani officers serving alongside their international counterparts at NATO headquarters are acquiring a deep understanding of NATO standards and procedures, as well as gaining valuable experience in an international environment. The expertise gained by PSP officers is subsequently applied to ongoing reforms within the Azerbaijani Armed Forces, enhancing their capabilities upon their return.
Azerbaijan remains one of the largest contributors to the NATO PSP program. Participation in this program offers mutual benefits to both Azerbaijan and NATO. Azerbaijani officers not only fulfill their assigned duties but also actively contribute to NATO’s Partnership Programs. Currently, several PSP officers from Azerbaijan are involved in organizing various NATO courses, training sessions, exercises, and conferences as experts at NATO Headquarters and in different Allied and Partner countries.
Azerbaijani officers have served alongside NATO colleagues in various environments, including NATO operations. Their exemplary service has not gone unnoticed. Over the years, three Azerbaijani officers have been awarded the NATO Meritorious Service Medal, the highest honor bestowed by NATO. This prestigious award recognizes their exceptional service and commitment to the alliance’s values and missions.
