Current geopolitical situation in the world and dynamics of its development triggers new threats and challenges in different areas. Today Allies and Partners are facing with threats and challenges such as energy security, climate change, attacks on energy infrastructure, international terrorism, and cyber-attacks that extend beyond national borders. Emerging security challenges are potential, upcoming, non-traditional threats to our security that are real, and traditional policy patterns are unsuited to addressing them. Strengthening partnership and cooperation with international stakeholders and changing our policy patterns is required in order to tackle such threats effectively. Given the relevance of the matter the Alliance continues to develop new expertise, policies and activities on those challenges, and maintain awareness of Allies and Partners.
Within the framework of emerging security challenges, Azerbaijan cooperates with NATO on energy security, climate change and security, counter-terrorism, and cyber defense.
2023 NATO Vilnius Summit Communiqué stressed that energy security plays an important role in Allies’ common security. The last energy crisis has underlined the importance of a stable and reliable energy supply and the diversification of routes, suppliers, and sources. Allies are seeking and will continue to seek diversification of their energy supplies, in line with their needs and conditions.
Being an important component of our partnership, political dialog between Azerbaijan and NATO at all levels, as well as mutual visits of delegations of both sides are paramount in strengthening energy security of Allies and partners.
During the visit of NATO Secretary General to Azerbaijan on March 17-18, 2024, energy security issues were also discussed during his meeting with the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev.
Climate change and security is one of the most topical issue on the agenda of NATO, Allies and partners.
Azerbaijan’s leadership and its efforts in addressing climate change at the national, regional, and global levels has been recognized by electing the country as host country of 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) with unanimous support from all countries. It is a sign of respect and confidence from the international community to Azerbaijan and recognition of Azerbaijan as a country playing an important role in tackling climate change. To host COP29 is a significant milestone for Azerbaijan and we are dedicated to further promoting global solidarity and unity in addressing the challenges of climate change.
