A delegation consisting of NATO North Atlantic Council Ambassadors made a first-ever visit to Azerbaijan

On 6-7 November 2025, a delegation consisting of NATO North Atlantic Council Ambassadors made a first-ever visit to Azerbaijan.

The delegation included the permanent representatives of Türkiye, Greece, Hungary, Montenegro, France, the Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Portugal, Spain to NATO, as well as the deputy permanent representatives of the United States and France to NATO.

Within the framework of the visit, the delegation met with the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, as well as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Fariz Rzayev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan - Head of Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration Hikmet Hajiyev. The delegation also paid a visit to the ADA University.

During the meeting with the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, the importance of President Ilham Aliyev’s receiving the Alliance’s delegation was emphasized and the visits of the President of Azerbaijan to NATO headquarters was fondly recalled.

The guests stated that the foundation of Azerbaijan’s current development was laid by the National Leader Heydar Aliyev and emphasized that under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, the country has become even stronger in all areas.

The delegates also conveyed their congratulations to President Ilham Aliyev on the achievements reached in Washington toward advancing the peace agenda between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

The head of state expressed his gratitude for the congratulations, highlighting the special role of U.S. President Donald Trump in this matter, saying that the agreements reached open up broad opportunities for the development of the region.

Recalling his visits to NATO headquarters, President Ilham Aliyev noted that although support for operations in Afghanistan constitutes an important part of Azerbaijan-NATO cooperation, the agenda also includes collaboration between Azerbaijan and the Alliance in regional development, energy security and other areas.

The head of state emphasized that the Azerbaijani Army has been brought into conformity with NATO standards, highlighting the close collaboration with the Turkish army within this framework. In this regard, he underscored the role of expanding relations between Azerbaijan and the Alliance.

President Ilham Aliyev underlined that since Azerbaijan gained its independence at the beginning of the last century, the country has achieved its main goal - the liberation of its lands from occupation, adding that the process of modernization of the country’s army will be continued.

During the conversation, it was noted that Azerbaijan is a valuable partner of NATO and that Azerbaijani peacekeepers were the last military personnel to leave Afghanistan. The services of Azerbaijani Armed Forces in the Resolute Support Missionin Afghanistan, and the contribution of Azerbaijan as a regional transport and logistics hub in this regard were also praised.

The parties also stressed the close friendly and strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and NATO member states, noting that Azerbaijan has been actively participating in the NATO’s programs since 1994 within the framework of NATO's Partnership for Peace Program.

The sides discussed the prospects of Azerbaijan-NATO cooperation, as well as exchanged views on regional and global matters.

During the meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov, the main aspects of the Azerbaijan–NATO partnership agenda, as well as regional and international security issues, and the current state and prospects of the Azerbaijan–Armenia peace process were discussed.

Speaking about the history of the occupation and the security situation in the region during the post-conflict period, Minister Jeyhun Bayramov informed the ambassadors about the agreements reached within the framework of the Washington Summit, the prospects for peace, and plans regarding transportation corridors in the region. In addition, attention was drawn to the mine threat in the area, and other issues of mutual interest were discussed.

Subsequently, a working luncheon was held with the NATO delegation and Mr. Fariz Rzayev, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

During the meeting between the NATO delegation and Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan - Head of Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, the sides held a broad overview of fruitful and successful NATO-Azerbaijan partnership and exchanged views on regional security issues and advancing Azerbaijan-Armenia peace agenda.

Within the framework of their visit to Azerbaijan, the NATO delegation also visited ADA University, hosted by the Institute for Development and Diplomacy. Vice Rectors of ADA University, Fariz Ismayilzade and Gunay Ziyadova, met with the delegation and delivered a presentation to the guests on the University’s quality of education and continuous development.

During their visit to our country, the NATO delegation toured the city of Baku and got familiarized with Azerbaijan’s rich culture and history.
